A six-month reciprocal exchange fits home education well: sending your own child abroad raises no term-time absence or school-place question. Hosting still carries the same legal duties as for any other UK family.

A Familiar Culture
Home-educating families are often familiar with supportive, community-led networks and learning beyond the classroom, both of which align closely with EFI’s approach.
What Home Education Doesn’t Change
Although home education removes concerns about term-time absence, all other programme requirements remain unchanged. Every family, whether home-educating or not, completes the same interview, home visit and preparation weekend. Every UK host family is also subject to the private fostering notification requirements described on our Safeguarding page. A child travelling abroad still requires the same visa and destination-school arrangements as any other exchange participant. Home education can simplify the practical arrangements, but it does not alter the safeguarding or legal requirements.
One limit to be aware of before matching: a home-educating household cannot host a child who comes to the UK on a school-sponsored Child Student visa, because that route requires the child to attend the sponsoring school. Home-educating hosts are matched with children entering on other routes, and we confirm the route with you before a match is agreed.
A change on the horizon: the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026 provides for compulsory local-authority registers of children not in school in England and will require local-authority consent before certain children are withdrawn from school. As at July 2026, those provisions are not yet in force and their commencement date has not been set. During the exchange, children continue their education in keeping with the host family’s approach while benefiting from the full immersion on which every EFI exchange is built. This experience supports language development, confidence and independence.
